Most patients do not require x-rays; instead, the Chiropractor relies on specific tests and palpation skills to diagnose the cause of your symptoms. However, there may be situations where the Chiropractor decides an x-ray is required. In this situation we can refer you back to your GP, there is usually no cost associated with standard imaging, however, this can take much longer and is at the digression of your GP.
If you require imaging quicker, we have the option to refer you privately. This can either be self-funded or if you have health insurance which covers imaging, this can usually be claimed back fully.
X-RAY imaging can be used to investigate almost any area of the body for reasons including:
Trauma Injuries – any broken or fractured bones, swelling or dislocations will need to be confirmed before any form of treatment can start.
Scoliosis – undiagnosed scoliosis will need to be confirmed by x-ray to find out the full extent of any structural changes.
Degeneration – if you Chiropractor suspects you may have some degeneration such as arthritis this can be confirmed through x-ray imaging.
Infections – any serious infections which could be causing damage can usually be picked up on x-ray.
While for the majority of cases x-rays are a sufficient diagnostic tool, sometimes an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is required to help with a diagnosis. MRI’s can pick up bones, muscles, organs and other soft tissue, and can show everything in much more detail than an x-ray. This makes MRI’s ideal for diagnosing disc herniation among many other conditions.
MRI scans can be used to investigate almost any area of the body including:
Nervous system – including the brain and spinal cord
Bones & Joints – you can check for tears and damage to joint surfaces, ligaments & tendons
Blood vessels – the condition of arteries and veins can be viewed and assessed
Internal organs – all organs can be checked for size and functional condition
Your Chiropractor can refer you for an MRI through the NHS, however, there is usually a waiting list. Private options are available, with all providers being approved by the main private insurance companies. Self-pay referral options are also available starting at £200.
