What is Lymphatic Drainage?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a very gentle form of advanced massage therapy aimed at moving the lymph under the skin using specialised, gentle, rhythmic techniques, and it aids the formation and transport of lymph around the body. The fluid in the lymphatic system helps remove waste and toxins from the bodily tissues. Some health conditions can cause lymph fluid to build up. Lymphatic drainage massages can benefit people with lymphoma, fibromyalgia, and other conditions.
Lymphatic Drainage Massage is generally suitable for most adults seeking relief from fluid retention, swelling, or support for their body's natural detoxification processes. Here at Chichester Chiropractic Health Centre, our certified therapists have completed specialised training in Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), enabling them to provide this gentle, therapeutic treatment safely and effectively for a wide range of clients.
This light, rhythmic technique uses very gentle pressure and precise strokes to stimulate the lymphatic system, helping to move excess fluid toward functioning lymph nodes where it can be processed and eliminated. Sessions typically focus on key drainage areas such as the neck, armpits, abdomen, and groin to open pathways, followed by work on the affected regions.
Your massage can cover the full body — including the neck, shoulders, arms, hands, back, abdomen, hips, legs, feet, and even the face — with particular attention to any areas of puffiness, bloating, or discomfort. Whether you're managing post-surgical swelling, chronic fluid retention, or simply wish to feel lighter and more balanced, the treatment is fully customizable to your needs.

What Are The Benefits of Lymphatic Drainage?
Lymphatic Drainage can help with the following:
- Reduces swelling and fluid retention
- Supports immune function — By promoting better lymph flow, it helps circulate immune cells more effectively, potentially strengthening the body's natural defences against infections and illness.
- Aids detoxification — The technique encourages the removal of metabolic waste, toxins, and excess proteins from tissues, which can contribute to an overall feeling of lightness and renewal.
- Promotes deep relaxation and stress relief — The slow, soothing movements activate the parasympathetic nervous system, helping to lower stress, improve sleep quality, and provide a calming effect on the mind and body.
- Improves circulation and reduces inflammation — Enhanced lymph movement can support better blood flow, nutrient delivery to tissues, and relief from inflammatory conditions (such as certain types of arthritis).
- May help with specific conditions — Benefits have been noted for neuropathy relief, chronic fatigue (including some long-COVID symptoms), rheumatoid arthritis, and post-surgical recovery (including cosmetic procedures).
- Enhances skin appearance — Especially with facial lymphatic drainage, it can reduce puffiness, improve glow, and contribute to a more refreshed complexion by decreasing fluid buildup under the skin.
